DESCRIPTION

This course studies Renaissance art and architecture in western Europe from the late 13th to the early 16th century in the context of the cultural, philosophical, social, political, economic and religious transformation of the continent. We will not only look at at the Italian Renaissance, with major artists including Giotto, Donatello, Botticelli, Masaccio, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo and Raphael, but also at the Flemish Renaissance (Jan van Eyck, Robert Campin, Rogier van der Weyden, Hans Memling, Hugo van der Goes and Hieronymus Bosch) as well as the regional stylistic variations in Provence and France.
